Medical Marijuana

What is Medical Marijuana?

Medical marijuana is any part of the cannabis plant that is used for treating health problems. It is used to get relief from certain symptoms and not for recreational purposes.

Most of the marijuana that is sold legally as a medicine contains the same ingredients as the marijuana that is used to get high.

Some strains of medical cannabis are however grown in a specific manner to have less of the chemicals that cause a feeling of euphoria.

HEALTH SYMPTOMS

The cannabis plant has many chemicals which are known as cannabinoids. The main two are CBD and THC. THC is responsible for the pleasant effects that pot smokers look for, but some of its effects also treat many health symptoms. According to research even CBD has medicinal value but does not give a high.

People who smoke cannabis start to feel the effects almost immediately, while the people who eat it may take about an hour to get the feel.

When a person smokes cannabis, the THC goes from the lungs to the blood and then to the brain causing the brain to release the chemical dopamine which leaves you feeling high.

There is lesser knowledge in the scientific community about the working of CBD. Most experts think that CBD sometimes works in combination with THC and sometimes on its own to have an impact on the brain.

It may also reduce the symptoms of multiple sclerosis like muscle stiffness and spasms, pain and frequent urination.

Side Effects Of Medical Marijuana - Short Term And Long Term

Medical marijuana is often used in many incurable diseases to provide a palliative treatment. This is due to its qualities or reducing pain and easing many other symptoms related to many serious ailments. This is the reason that the United States government has made the sale of marijuana legal for medicinal purposes and even in some states for recreational purposes. There are also the short and long term side effects of medical marijuana which you need to consider.

Medical marijuana can change your mood and can make you feel happy, relaxed sleepy or anxious. It can also disrupt short term memory and decision making abilities. These side effects can last for one to three hours. Larger doses of medical cannabis can cause some people to have hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia. According to research, smoking marijuana can make some breathing problems like asthma worse.

People who regularly smoke marijuana may suffer from respiratory problems like a chronic cough and are at a higher risk for lung infections. According to studies, marijuana use is also linked to some mental ailments like anxiety, depression, reduced motivation and suicidal thoughts in young people. Pregnant mothers who use marijuana can put their babies at risk for medical problems. Marijuana can also lead to addiction because it is a habit forming product.

In spite of the side effects of marijuana, it is beneficial for treating many symptoms of serious ailments. This is the reason that the United States government and the FDA have approved two drugs made from marijuana legal. A drug Dronabinol has synthetic THC and is used to treat nausea due to chemotherapy. Nabilone also has a man-made chemical that is similar to THC and is used for the same purpose.
